Background: This homeowner spent years crafting his family's dream house years and years ago. The prefabricated unpainted siding was fading and starting to show water damage in spots. All of the wood siding, trim, soffits, fascia, posts, and beams had dried out and were water damaged, sun bleached, and were desperately in need of a sealant to avoid further damage.

Considerations: There were a few things that made this project unique. 1) The mix of siding that needed paint with everything else being wood in need of stain required a different order of operations and technique than most homes. The wood was so bleached, baked, and water-damaged that it needed multiple thick coats of pigmented stain to not only seal it but bring back the natural wood color and hide the damage. 2) This home was bigger and taller than nearly all of the other hundreds of homes that we've refurbished around Gallatin Valley with Bobcat Painting. The chimney above the roofline in the backyard peaked just about 50 feet above the concrete patio below.

 

Process: To ensure we were able to do a great job on every square inch of this complex build, our crews utilized fall harnesses for roof work and ladders to reach all of the intricate walls surrounded by gardens, walkways, railings, and other obstacles. As always we started with thorough scraping of flaking paint, spot priming raw areas, and caulking literally thousands of cracked joints and seams. After we double checked that we hit every necessary prep spot, we worked multiple coats of stain into the all the exterior wood on the home until it was all thoroughly covered and saturated. Finally, to ensure clean lines, we painted every inch of siding board by hand giving it the proper "french cut" look where the sides of the wood trim remained unpainted... Something that can't be done with a sprayer or untrained painter;)
